Breaking the Silence

For twenty-one months, I was faithful to my blog.  For twenty-one months, I wrote at least once a month, most times more.  For twenty-one months, I updated you all devotedly on my travels and experiences.

For two months, I have been silent.

I wrote a final blog entry, in the Johannesburg International Airport, telling you all that I was temporarily leaving Africa for the comforts of North America.  I meant to give it a final read-though, but I guess I got caught up in the hectic way of life over here.  And so, that blog entry, filled with reflection on five gorgeous months of travel, never made it onto the blog.

Instead, silence.

I have betrayed you, loyal blog readers.  I have left you hanging, wondering.  I should have written about the week I spent in Washington, DC, doing a bit of sightseeing in between wedding planning and celebrating with my wonderful Thailand friend, Erin.  I should have written about my four days in New York City, spent catching up with friends like Muna, Tara, Sahnah, and Alex, and hitting the town with my Aunt Louise and her hip friends.  I should have written about the five weeks I spent in Grand-Barachois, New Brunswick, lapping up time with my parents, relatives, and childhood friends, amid kayak sessions, yoga classes, and hours on the beach.  This would all have made for good blog reading.

And yet, all I gave you was silence.

Maybe I needed the blog break.  After twenty-one months of loyal attention, sometimes you just need a break.  Perhaps, though, a two-month break is a bit exaggerated…

And so, dedicated audience of mine, I have good news that comes with a promise: I depart tomorrow for Africa, yet again.  This time, the setting is East Africa, where Bruno awaits.  I have a job in store for me in Uganda.  I will be working as a grade 5 teacher at a new international school in Kampala, and I start August 1st.  This means that soon, the blog will be filled with impressions and experiences of new places.  Of course, I will be working longer and harder hours than I was during my twenty-one months in Southern Africa, so I cannot promise weekly entries anymore.  But, I pledge not to let a month go by without at least one entry.

There.  You happy?  I’ve broken the silence!
