a touristy day

Well I just wanted to write a short post because it seems like I have quite a bit of free time today. I have checked out of my guesthouse but don’t have to be in my next location for another 4 hours and it’s only 1 hour away. So I am relaxing and trying to stay out of the heat (it’s really hot today). Yesterday I had an interview with a language school here in Ayutthaya and I am not at all interested. The place seemed disorganized, the manager seemed kind of sleezy, and the hours are just not at all what I am looking for. So I spent the rest of the day wandering around and checking out some temples and ruins. Ayutthaya used to be the capital of Thailand back in the 13oos but in the 15oos (maybe) The Kmer Rouge destroyed a lot of the city. It was really neat to wander around the ruins. I went on a boat tour to visit 2 ruins and a working Thai/Chinese temple (which is way more of a touristy thing than I usually do, but what can I say, I like boat rides). The boat then dropped us off at the night market and I wandered around and ate dinner. Though my Thai is coming along fairly well, I am finding it most difficult to communicate what I want to eat. The only vocab for Thai dishes I know is kao put pak (vegetable fried rice), tom yam (soour and spicy soup), and pat thai so I keep ordering these same dishes. I am a little scared to try random things on the menu simply because most of them have pork or chicken in it. I don’t want to eat chicken because of bird flu, and pork… well, yuck! I am looking forward to having a guide who can choose my dishes for me again, like I had those first few days.
I have a busy next few days because I have 3 schools to visit in 3 days, and then I am taking a 14 hour train ride down to the south to visit my southern most school on Tuesday. I am hoping to get there Monday morning so that I can have a beach day! (Monday is a holiday so the schools are closed).
I have several pictures to post, just no way to do so. I will let you know when I have posted them though! Be well, yee people of the cold white snowy north!
