Author Archives: Marrakech is, according to most, a tourist factory, a city that churns up and spits out tourists, and not at all representative of the rest of Morocco. But it’s also where I met up with my parents to kick-start our Christmas in Morocco! Read on for our first experienced in the medina and souqs; first bargaining experiences; visits of a few architectural sites; and our evenings in the infamous Djemaa el Fna.  This adventure happened almost a year ago, and I wanted to share it at the time with you on Wandering Footsteps, but I was trying to get a story about it published. It finally happened: my story about searching for sea turtles in Oman was published by Global Green Travel! Here’s a link to that story as well as an photo-filled alternate version.  Driving along Morocco’s Atlantic Coast, I learned a lot of new words, like medinas, souqs, and hammams. This post defines these terms through our visits to El Jadida and Essaouira, two fascinating ancient Moroccan coastal cities. There are lots of pretty photos of our visits, too!  After spending 6 months in Europe, Morocco sure is a shock to the senses! In this post, I discuss what it feels like to travel in Morocco after Europe as well as some of my first sensory impressions. We’re looking forward to spending a few months in this complex, beautiful, and whirlwind of a country!  As the clock strikes midnight and we embark into 2016, I take a moment to reflect on what 2015 has been for Wandering Footsteps – a lot of travel and a lot of wonderful reunions.
