Category Archives: East Africa Northern Kenya’s long, car-busting Marsabit-Moyale road, which cuts through arid plains violently fought over by tribal warriors, is legendary among overlanders. It’s also the only way to drive to Ethiopia, our next destination. Read on to learn about the current road conditions and to hear our surprising conclusions on the road trip.  Bruno met Josu and Ana, a couple of Basques traveling overland around the world, in Nepal. They re-met in India. Then in Pakistan, Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia. And here, In a little campsite on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, they reunite on a third continent. That’s just how it rolls with overland roadies!  Back in Kenya, but not for long. Armed with Ethiopian and Sudanese visas (that weren’t so easy to get!) we’re headed North folks! Well, north, then east, then north again, then west, west, west! After seven-and-a-half months traveling overland through East Africa, it’s safe to say it wasn’t my favorite region of Africa. Too expensive, too overcrowded, too polluted. But even though I didn’t love East Africa, I’m happy I went. Travel isn’t about loving everything you see and do and every place you visit. It’s about venturing forth and checking the world out. Go, I say. Always go.  Seven months, seven countries, some 10,000km. With our return to Kampala, our East African Loop – otherwise known as the Extended Honeymoon Loop – was completed. We’d looped the loop. A mixture of deja-vu, transit travel, and self-reflection would be the theme of our onward travel to Nairobi. |
