Category Archives: Horn of Africa Gondar, the 17th century capital of Ethiopia, may have once been a place of splendour and magnificence. But, just like the crumbling castles and palaces of the Royal Enclosure, the majesty of Gondar has disintegrated, and it is now but a ruined shell of its glorious legacy. It’s time to say goodbye to Ethiopia.  Merry Christmas everyone! Except, that is, the people of Ethiopia. They have to wait another two weeks to celebrate the birth of Jesus. As with all things in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church likes to do things a bit differently than the rest of the world. Lalibela, the site of eleven thousand-year-old rock-hewn churches, is living proof of that!  Some people liken injera to a wet carpet. But I became obsessed with this slightly sour, slightly spongy pancake that is the staple of Ethiopian cuisine. Read on as I eat my way through Ethiopia in search of the perfect injera, learning about this unique food along the way!  We were heading back into Djibouti after exploring beautiful Djibouti and celebrating our first wedding anniversary with an incredibly diverse, interesting day. Only one thing was wrong – our whale shark snorkelling trip was cancelled (again) and it was looking likely that we’d leave the country without seeing the biggest fish alive…  To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, Bruno and I decided to take a mini-holiday to Djibouti. Not only was it a new country for both of us (a first since I’ve known Bruno), but we would try to snorkel with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world! Happy Anniversary to us! |
