I hadn’t seen an elephant in months, and it was killing me. I craved their trumpeting sound, their majestic ears, and the grand presence. We headed to Malawi’s Vwaza Marsh to break the elephant dry spell. It did, but not in the way I had expected.

Category Archives: Southern Africa We followed in the footsteps of David Livingstone along Lake Malawi and the lush hilltop town of Livingstonia. It taught me a lot about missionaries, slavery, and the legacy of a great explorer.  Malawi feels like the poorest country I have ever been to in Africa – and I’ve been to quite a few of them now. In fact, according to most statistics, Malawi is one of the 10 poorest countries in the entire world. It shows.  It was my first time setting eyes on Lake Malawi. We explored Tanzania’s tip of this infamous lake from a very crooked pirogue. What we found was that we liked the lake – from land! After almost 6 months of overland travel through Southern Africa, this travel loop is looped. As I sit at the airport, ready to head off to Canada, I reflect on the highlights of my trip and all the things I have to be thankful about. |
