Category Archives: Southern Europe Our time in Spain’s infamous region of Andalucía may not have included bullfighting in Seville, the mighty Alhambra in Granada, or sunbathing along the Costa del Sol (though it did involve witnessing a flamenco performance, visiting the Picasso Museum, and wandering around a few pueblos blancos), but it was an apt and honest portrait of the great, average, and less-than-amazing moments that traveling full-time around the world involves.  It’s amazing how six square kilometers of rock at the edge of a peninsula can be so different from the land it’s attached to. But this is not just any rock – it’s the infamous Rock of Gibraltar, a tiny British enclave surrounded by sea and Spain. And, unexpectedly, we got to visit for the day!  After walking part of the Camino de Santiago, Bruno and I are officially into long-distance hikes. Though we didn’t have time to walk all of it, we sampled the Rota Vicentina, a new network of walking trails in Portugal’s south-west Algarve Coast. Here’s the story of our experience on the trail, and a request for help from our readers.  In the midst of our transit south, Bruno and I took a bit of time to visit Portugal’s two largest cities – Porto and Lisbon. What follows are two tales of our visits to these tantalizing cities, which include port wine tastings, wanders along coastlines, discussions of ceramic tiles, a sampling of Portuguese pastries, and an evening of Fado music. Brief though they were, our visits offered us a glimpse of two cities worthy of great tales. |
