Category Archives: North America Of all the wildlife encounters I’ve had (and there have been many!), spotting whales has always been one of my favourite. It was no surprise, then, that when I learned that we could see beluga whales in Quebec’s Fjord du Saguenay, or any of thirteen species of whale in the Saint Lawrence River, I was in!  I have been to twenty African countries; I’ve slept on deserted islands in the South Pacific; and I have trekked in jungles in Asia and South America. After almost two months in this country, I can safely say that never have I ever experienced a wilderness so wild as in Canada.  I used to think the Prairie Provinces were the armpit of Canada. I’m not quite sure where this bias came from, but I’m now ashamed of it. I’ve now been to the Prairies, and I’ve been proven wrong.  It’s a good year to do a road trip across Canada. It’s the sesquicentennial, the 150th birthday of the country. In fact, today is Canada Day! As we crossed through three Canadian provinces this month, we witnessed evidence of Canada’s special birthday as we got to know new corners of the country. Happy Canada Day!  Who knew the world was so large? I sure didn’t. Up until a few months ago, all I knew was a placed called Phoenix. Now, I’ve seen canyons and mountains and forests and prairies and lakes and more animals than I ever knew existed. Now, I have a family. A new job. Now, I have a second chance at life. |
