After walking part of the Camino de Santiago, Bruno and I are officially into long-distance hikes. Though we didn’t have time to walk all of it, we sampled the Rota Vicentina, a new network of walking trails in Portugal’s south-west Algarve Coast. Here’s the story of our experience on the trail, and a request for help from our readers.

  • jamie - I’m planning to walk the Rota Vicentina by myself (woman). Do you see any safety issues?

Beautiful photos. Thank you! Now I’ll be prepared for lots of sand walking…

    • Brittany - Hi Jamie, thank you for visiting our blog and for your question! 🙂 We didn’t do a lot of the Rota Vicentina, but based on what we did do, my only concern as a solo female hiker is that the route is a bit desolate (at least the part we did). There aren’t a ton of hikers yet because it’s not as famous as the Camino de Santiago, for example. If you’re concerned, my recommendation would be to go in “high season” (or at least not low season) and maybe try walking with another hiker you meet in the overnight accommodation. That’s what a lot of women I met on the Camino did and it was always easy to find a walking buddy.

In the midst of our transit south, Bruno and I took a bit of time to visit Portugal’s two largest cities – Porto and Lisbon. What follows are two tales of our visits to these tantalizing cities, which include port wine tastings, wanders along coastlines, discussions of ceramic tiles, a sampling of Portuguese pastries, and an evening of Fado music. Brief though they were, our visits offered us a glimpse of two cities worthy of great tales.

We’ve been really lucky with the weather in northern Spain these past few weeks, but it can’t last forever. It’s time to head south for the winter! We’ve started our southern migration to Morocco with a 6-day transit to the coast of Portugal. Read on to hear about all the awesome places we couldn’t visit along the way.

    • Brittany - Thanks for your blessing! We’re here in Morocco waiting for you! 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Angie - Oooo, it’s hard to imagine that degree of coldness when we are sitting here at thirty degrees!

    Enjoy Maroc, keep warm…..xxReplyCancel

    • Brittany - We thought of you guys more than once when we were stuck in the cold and you were in hot hot Namibia. In fact, Bruno once joked that you guys recommended northern Spain to us as one big fat joke (“Gotcha” type-thing)!

But, no, for real, we loved it – we’ll just plan to go back in May or September one year is all! 🙂ReplyCancel
