Bruno was raring to hit the road after nine nights at a luxury resort. He opted for a hard-to-reach campsite on one of the worst roads I’d seen yet. A stressful situation and one wrong move resulted in a beat-up Toyota. Oops!
One of the ways that a book comes alive for me is by reading it in the country where it is set. Equally, one of the ways that a country comes alive for me is by reading books about it. Here is my take on six books set in Kenya that I’ve recently read.
A visit to the community-run Mida Creek Boardwalk and Bird Hide, on the coast of Kenya, was a great place to appreciate the birds and learn about the value of mangroves.

Nairobi has a bad reputation. The 2012 Westgate Mall shooting. The 1998 US embassy bombing. The 2007 post-election riots.
Crime. Violence. Unsafe. Dirty. Chaotic. Slums.
Really, though, Nairobi is just like any other capital city in Africa – no better, but really no worse either. With that in mind, Bruno and I decided to enjoy ten days here.
