Tag Archives: Travel reflections – In between ten-month stints of travel, discovery, and a different view out the window each day, it’s nice to get a bit of stillness, comfort, and routine in my life. That’s what I appreciate most when I return to my parents’ home in New Brunswick, Canada.  Wandering Footsteps has faithfully charted my development as a person, a traveler, and a writer for an entire decade. I’ve shared reflections, profound experiences, funny stories, challenging moments, inspiring encounters, and lessons learned. Through Wandering Footsteps, I’ve become who I am today.  On the day I celebrated the one-month anniversary of my arrival in Turkey, Bruno and I hiked in the foothills of the Ala Dağlar Mountains. I reflected on my time here so far, and came to the conclusion that a country I can walk in is a country I like. And I’ve already walked a lot in Turkey.  Over the past three months, we have felt nothing but warmth, hospitality, and safety on the Arabian Peninsula – surprising if you follow Western media-created perceptions of this region of the world. As I depart for Turkey, and Bruno for Iran, all we can say is shukran (thank you) Arabia, for teaching us the truth about your culture.  The Jebel Akhdar mountain range reads like a tourist brochure – Oman’s highest mountain, its deepest wadi, its best fort, best cave, oldest ruins. Tourists flock here because it’s a way to see the greatest variety of Oman concentrated in a single region. We’re two more tourists here to check these sites off our list. Yet, it was the moments in between the sites that surprised us most. |
