Tag Archives: Mini-holidays – I was pumped for my two weeks of solo travel in Istanbul. It had, after all, been a very long time since I took a trip without a partner or friend. But after money issues and health problems, I began to wonder if I was no longer cut out for solo travel. Would I be able to enjoy Istanbul alone?  I left Bruno and the Arabian Peninsula behind and took advantage of cheap Dubai flights to jet-set to Singapore. Despite seeing and eating my way through much of the country, this wasn’t a touristic trip, but a chance to spend a week with my long-lost best friend, Alex. A fantastic, rejuvenating and inspiring week it was – thanks Alex!  We were heading back into Djibouti after exploring beautiful Djibouti and celebrating our first wedding anniversary with an incredibly diverse, interesting day. Only one thing was wrong – our whale shark snorkelling trip was cancelled (again) and it was looking likely that we’d leave the country without seeing the biggest fish alive…  To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, Bruno and I decided to take a mini-holiday to Djibouti. Not only was it a new country for both of us (a first since I’ve known Bruno), but we would try to snorkel with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world! Happy Anniversary to us!  To walk in rural France is to step back into an era where babies were bathed in basins in cobblestone streets, women set laundry on second story lines draped above narrow alleyways, and men spent evenings sat on benches in rows facing the street, perfectly placed to watch the world slowly go by. |
