La Maison Des Esclaves

These are photos of “la maison des esclaves” (slave house) at Goree Island. The first picture was taken in one of the cells (this one, for well-behaved slaves, actually had small windows). They are so narrow, and 30 or so slaves would be packed in there like sardines. I can’t imagine the sanitary conditions were that great.
The second picture is the doorway at the end of the “hall of no return”. This is the hallway slaves would walk down as they said goodbye to Africa forever. On the other end of that door is the coast, and a boat would be there, waiting to take them to America.
