Tag Archives: Special encounters – We have quite a history with the American state of Arizona. It’s where we purchased our Big Blue Bus, where we did most of its conversion from an ordinary shuttle bus into our home-on-wheels; and it’s where we conceived our baby boy, Phoenix. Our return this month to Arizona has brought one very special journey full-circle.  Have you ever felt out of place in society? Or had a big, scary dream that you keep trying to push away? Have you ever had an inner voice that spoke to you for so long and so loudly that you simply couldn’t ignore it any more? If so, then this story – of a brand new overlanding family, and also my cousin – is for you!  We hadn’t seen our Greek overlanding friends since Africa, so when we found out we would be traveling to their home country, they were the first to know. Nikos and Georgia offered us the use of their family home on the island of Evia, an offer we couldn’t turn down. Here’s our experience living like locals for 8 days on one of Greece’s least-touristy islands.  This summer – like most – we visited my family home in New Brunswick, Canada. But this year, for the first time – we brought our baby boy, Phoenix, along for the trip. It was a new kind of summer in New Brunswick, and one like no other!  Fifty kilometers east of Mexico City, the little village of Nanacamilpa welcomes visitors every summer evening to their now-infamous firefly sanctuary. Tonight I am one of those visitors, riding past the potato and corn fields into the pine forest, a sprinkle of raindrops blurring my eyesight. I am not arriving to the firefly sanctuary in our Big Blue Bus, but on the back of a quad, with three police escorts. |
