Aartee

Though she’s 13 she rarely acts her age. Sometimes she acts much older – helping tutor the younger kids, responsibly doing her homework, making tea or kaja… At the same time, she’s not interested in boys or anything else that 13 year olds in the West are interested in. I guess in that way, she’s the ideal Nepali girl.
Aartee is definitely the typical younger sister – always wanting to know what the older girls are talking about, and whining when she doesn’t get her way.
She LOVES to answer all my questions or help me if I don’t know how something in Nepal works.
Sometimes she comes into my room randomly to stare at me or just to chat. It’s no big deal, except she seems to often pick the most inopportune times, like when I am doing prep work for the next day’s classes. Then, when I’m chilling outside with the family or at the market with just her, she’ll sit or walk next to me with nothing to say
I find her family very tolerant of her ways.
Aartee and Jyoti have a very special relationship. Aartee obviously admires her older sister and always follows her around and wants to do what she’s doing. But Jyoti, unlike a typical older sister, doesn’t mind having her sister with her at all times. She loves her very much and considers her more as a friend than a younger sister.
All in all, Aartee is completely good-natured and sweet. She has a zest for life and a good, silly sense of humor. She loves people and being “in the know”, even if that means butting her head into conversations that aren’t meant for her ears!
