On the Move: Travel Plans and Route

Friends, we are about to hit the road for a big multi-month and multi-country road trip!

It’s about time! Our year hasn’t involved a whole lot of road-tripping – between our two international trips without our Big Blue Bus home, we rented a house in Cuernavaca for seven weeks and spent most of the rest of our time in a handful of towns in central Mexico (especially Cholula, my personal favorite town in all of Mexico!)

The fact is, we have been in central Mexico for almost an entire year now… and, though it’s been a good home-base for us, we feel it’s finally time to move on.

The squiggle of lines around Mexico City is the extent of our travels since the beginning of the year. You can see our stops listed on the left. Let’s put it this way: we’ve only had to fill our gas tank five times this year!

Bruno and I discussed a few possible routes – east toward Vera Cruz, south toward Oaxaca, further south toward the Yucatan Peninsula and Guatemala. For various reasons, though, we decided on a route that might surprise you: we are heading north!

Winter is arriving in the northern hemisphere, so it probably seems counter-intuitive to head toward it when we have the freedom to drive south toward the sun. But the wide open spaces of the United State’s National and State parks are calling us, and we are going to answer their call. I personally feel like having a little break with the dense population, traffic, noise and pollution of Mexico. Plus, since we don’t like being constricted by park campground reservations, it makes sense to visit the US’ parks off-season.

So, here’s our [rough] plan:

From Puebla we will head south-west, toward Acapulco, which is the nearest coastal point from here. Can you believe in almost a year in Mexico we still haven’t been to the beach?!? Yeah, we need to change that!

We plan to stick toward the Pacific Coast as we slowly make our way north. We don’t have firm plans on particular spots we will explore, but we will try to move slowly enough that my parents (who will soon be moving back into the RV they stored near Mexico City) can reach us for the holidays.

From Mazatlan, we will either head inland toward Texas or take a ferry to Baja California. Though we aren’t sure which route we will opt for, we do know that both routes will eventually bring us into the United States.

Once state-side, we plan to spend the remainder of winter and early spring exploring as many national and state parks as we can in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. We haven’t yet been to this region of the United States with Phoenix, so we are looking forward to hiking with him and allowing him to experience the vast and beautiful spaces of the southwest US.

This is the travel route we have planned for the next six months, taking us from central Mexico up to the SW USA. The southern part of our route along the coast is pretty much set. What we’re not sure yet is whether we will head inland from Mazatlán or west toward Baja. Both routes, though, will bring us to the US border and, eventually the
infamous parks of the SW USA!

So that’s our plan. It’s pretty general (as usual) and subject to change (as usual), but I wanted to give you all some idea of our upcoming six months.

It’s almost 2,000km to Mazatlan, and another 1,500 – 2,000km to the border, and we will certainly clock several thousand miles within the US this spring. Considering we’ve only filled our gas tank five times this year, I’d say we’ve got a proper road trip planned!

We look forward to hitting the road, heading to the coast and beyond, and to sharing our upcoming adventures with you on the blog and our Youtube channel. Don’t forget to subscribe to both to stay up to date with all our planned adventures these next six months!
